Course Status
Last checked August 2019. Everything OK.
As vegetation grows access to Y and IT can be tricky. In the wooded sections full leg covering is advised as there are lots of brambles and nettles.
NB. old maps indicate the S/F being on the South side of the steps, but it was moved to the North side.

Start/Finish
The Start is on the East side of the car park, on the North side of the steps.

From E end of Bury town centre, follow A56 N (Walmersley Road) for 1/2 mile. Turn R on to Royal Avenue. Car park is on R after sharp L turn.

Following the map from one wood into another...

Chesham Woods and Clarence Park is a medium size Local Nature Reserve with meadows, woods and the ruins of the old Chesham Hall, alongside a park area with lido, and gardens, all suitable for beginner orienteering. Review comments (16/6/16): Chesham Woods is a quite large area extending beyond the pond and café area into the Clarence Woods. The orienteering courses are quite challenging in the woodland, but also interesting and fun for families attempting the wheelchair/pushchair course in the area of the playgrounds. There are two cafés on site: the Jubilee Centre by the lake and the Bowling Green, adjacent to the children`s playground. Maps will shortly be available from these two outlets and there is plenty to do on a day out!

Courses available (see Course Colours)
W
White is the easiest level of course, suitable for young beginners. Controls are fairly close together, and usually at path junctions, or junctions of paths and streams or walls; distance is typically 1-1.5km; the best route should be obvious, along paths, and require very few decisions.

Y
Yellow is slightly longer and harder than White. Controls may be further apart, and are placed at junctions or obvious features; distance is typically 1-2.5km; the best route should be relatively obvious, but not necessarily along paths.

O
Orange courses are of medium difficulty and distance, suitable for adult beginners - controls may be 50m from paths, and reading map detail such as contours may be necessary; distance is typically 2-3.5km; you may have several choices of route - some of which may be across terrain rather than along paths.

Ch
Wheelchair courses are typically White courses where the path surfaces are suitable for wheelchairs; controls are visible from the paths; lengths are typically 1-1.5km.

S
Score courses are where you visit as many controls as you can, in any order you choose, usually within some kind of time limit - or see who can visit all the controls in the shortest time.

The Start is on the East side of the car park.

The Path (White/Wheelchair) course is 1.6km, 8 controls, and stays within the Clarence Park areas close to the car park.

The two Yellow courses (1.9km, 10 controls and 2.0km, 11 controls) run in opposite directions around the central woodlands and meadows.

The Orange course (3.5km, 15 controls) goes everywhere except the Clarence Park areas covered by the Path course.
