Course Status
Last checked April 2023. Everything OK.
Note that when the posts were installed, it looks like they were trying very hard to be unobtrusive – many posts are low to the ground, facing away from the approach and often several metres away from their feature. Look carefully!

Directions
From Jn 21 M62 take A663 to north end of Shaw. Take B6197 east (Buckstones Road). Pass a church on the first bend then in 350 metres turn left by the Methodist Church. Sign board – Crompton Moor, Brushes Clough Car Park. Go to the car park at the end of the road.

Crompton Moor is a disused quarry with a forested hillside, climbing up and out onto a considerable area of rough open moorland. The area is suitable for beginners and will also give the intermediate orienteer the navigational challenge of the open hillsides.

Reviewer comments, November 2016: Crompton Moor is a windswept and wonderful area high above Shaw to the North East of Oldham. For orienteering, walking and exploring moorland a visit to this area is a must! There are also cycling trails and skills course, based near the car park, pine woodland to explore and a walk to the mast at 391m above sea level. The stream that runs through the area falls into the lower quarry near post H, making an impressive sight in winter!

Courses available (see Course Colours)
Y
Yellow is slightly longer and harder than White. Controls may be further apart, and are placed at junctions or obvious features; distance is typically 1-2.5km; the best route should be relatively obvious, but not necessarily along paths.

O
Orange courses are of medium difficulty and distance, suitable for adult beginners - controls may be 50m from paths, and reading map detail such as contours may be necessary; distance is typically 2-3.5km; you may have several choices of route - some of which may be across terrain rather than along paths.

R
Red, or Long Orange, is the same intermediate standard as Orange, but is longer - typically 3.5-6km.

LG
Light Green is the easier end of difficult courses - controls may be on small features and contour shapes away from paths, but there will be a catching feature to stop you going too far if you miss it. Lengths are typically 2-4km.

S
Score courses are where you visit as many controls as you can, in any order you choose, usually within some kind of time limit - or see who can visit all the controls in the shortest time.

The Start is adjacent to the car park.

Courses available are Yellow (1.6km, 8 controls), Orange (3.3km, 11 controls), Red (4.1km, 10 controls), Light Green1 (3.2km, 7 controls) and Light Green2 (3.5km, 7 controls).

All courses climb above the quarries - the two light Green courses and the Red course climb right to the top of the moor.
