NB. Controls O, P, U, R, Y have been removed from the map, and the Orange course slightly adjusted accordingly – these posts have become impossible to access due to difficult vegetation.

From M60(J20) follow A627(M) S for 1m and take slip road to Oldham. Follow A627 for 1/2 mile to roundabout then A62 (Huddersfield). After 500m A672 forks L – continue along A62 for 1/2 mile into dip with PO on L in row of shops. Turn L on to Culvert Street and R after 100m to park (signed).

Overflow, Strinesdale upper reservoir.

Strinesdale is a wooded area surrounding two reservoirs, suitable for beginner orienteering. Connoisseurs of water engineering will be delighted by the comprehensive range of channels, ladders and retaining walls.

Reviewer comments (14/10/2016): A very interesting and varied area of woodland, reservoirs and items left over from the region`s industrial past. There is car parking at the start/finish area, just behind the new Waterhead Academy. The white course gives visitors a pleasant circuit of the lower reservoir with views over the water and out towards the open countryside. More challenging courses take in the upper reservoir and follow the border of the open farmland to the East and West of the site.

Courses available (see Course Colours)
W
White is the easiest level of course, suitable for young beginners. Controls are fairly close together, and usually at path junctions, or junctions of paths and streams or walls; distance is typically 1-1.5km; the best route should be obvious, along paths, and require very few decisions.

Y
Yellow is slightly longer and harder than White. Controls may be further apart, and are placed at junctions or obvious features; distance is typically 1-2.5km; the best route should be relatively obvious, but not necessarily along paths.

O
Orange courses are of medium difficulty and distance, suitable for adult beginners - controls may be 50m from paths, and reading map detail such as contours may be necessary; distance is typically 2-3.5km; you may have several choices of route - some of which may be across terrain rather than along paths.

Ch
Wheelchair courses are typically White courses where the path surfaces are suitable for wheelchairs; controls are visible from the paths; lengths are typically 1-1.5km.

S
Score courses are where you visit as many controls as you can, in any order you choose, usually within some kind of time limit - or see who can visit all the controls in the shortest time.

The White course is suitable for wheelchairs.

The White course (1.1km, 7 controls) goes round the lower reservoir; the Yellow (2.1km 10 controls) includes the upper reservoir; and the Orange (2.5km, 12 controls) covers all the area.
