Course Status
Last checked October 2026. Everything OK.
NB. Lots of clearing work has been done in the park making the slopes down to the lower end of the park easier to walk through. Long horn cattle return at the end of April. Keep an eye out for animal tracks as deer have been spotted in the park.
Take care around posts U (marsh and cattle damage) and Z (brambles and vegetation). Fencing and drainage work is under way around post U.
Control Q tends to become overgrown with vegetation.
NB. wheelchair users will need to obtain a radar key from the Ranger’s office – to unlock the padlocks on the gates they must pass through.

Start/Finish
There are two Starts: the North start is 500m from the Visitor Centre, at the gate into the Country Park. The South Start is a further 400m into the area, along the main track.

Tegg's Nose is a medium sized area with steep sides and wonderful views, and is suitable for fit beginner orienteers. The summit area features old quarrying, farmland and rough open land; the steep slopes include screes, woodland, brambles and other undergrowth, plus a good path network. The Visitor Centre and its car park are at the same height as the summit quarries, but 500m away from the orienteering map area, along a good track.

Courses available (see Course Colours)
W
White is the easiest level of course, suitable for young beginners. Controls are fairly close together, and usually at path junctions, or junctions of paths and streams or walls; distance is typically 1-1.5km; the best route should be obvious, along paths, and require very few decisions.

Y
Yellow is slightly longer and harder than White. Controls may be further apart, and are placed at junctions or obvious features; distance is typically 1-2.5km; the best route should be relatively obvious, but not necessarily along paths.

O
Orange courses are of medium difficulty and distance, suitable for adult beginners - controls may be 50m from paths, and reading map detail such as contours may be necessary; distance is typically 2-3.5km; you may have several choices of route - some of which may be across terrain rather than along paths.

R
Red, or Long Orange, is the same intermediate standard as Orange, but is longer - typically 3.5-6km.

Ch
Wheelchair courses are typically White courses where the path surfaces are suitable for wheelchairs; controls are visible from the paths; lengths are typically 1-1.5km.

S
Score courses are where you visit as many controls as you can, in any order you choose, usually within some kind of time limit - or see who can visit all the controls in the shortest time.

From the North Start (Gate):

There is a physically demanding Wheelchair course (1.8km, 7 controls) which goes round the summit quarries, and also provides a relatively long White course.

The Yellow2 course (0.9km, 7 controls), goes down to the South Start and back.

Most courses go from the South Start (Spur foot):

The Yellow1 course (1km, 6 controls) is almost the same as Yellow2, going up to the North Start and back; the Yellow3 course (1km, 7 controls) goes round the main quarry area.

The Orange course (2.1km, 10 controls) goes much of the way down the hill, on the West side of the map.

The Red course (2.6km, 13 controls) goes all the way down the hill, in the central and West parts of the map.
