Course Status
Last checked September 2023. Everything OK.
NB. post J has been moved out of brambles to the nearby log.
NB. controls W, V, N were re-sited in 2019 to avoid oncoming vegetation – W is now a plaque on a nearby bench, V has been moved SE 40m or so, N has been moved up onto the embankment. Make sure you get the latest map !
Brambles are continuing to expand everywhere.

K Car Park

Directions
From the South, leave the M60 at Jn 11 and follow the A57 East towards Eccles. Turn left onto Green Lane (B5231) and continue to Monton Green. The car park is left at the roundabout and immediately right.
From the North, leave the M60 at Jn 13 and follow the B5211 South to Winton and then turn left onto Parrin Lane (B5229) and continue to Monton Green. The car park is on the left just before the roundabout.

Dukes Drive, Monton is a small area of open grass and woods wedged between the Bridgewater Canal and the disused railway from Monton to Worsley. In times past it was a pitch and putt course. It is particularly suitable for young beginner orienteers.

Courses available (see Course Colours)
W
White is the easiest level of course, suitable for young beginners. Controls are fairly close together, and usually at path junctions, or junctions of paths and streams or walls; distance is typically 1-1.5km; the best route should be obvious, along paths, and require very few decisions.

O
Orange courses are of medium difficulty and distance, suitable for adult beginners - controls may be 50m from paths, and reading map detail such as contours may be necessary; distance is typically 2-3.5km; you may have several choices of route - some of which may be across terrain rather than along paths.

Ch
Wheelchair courses are typically White courses where the path surfaces are suitable for wheelchairs; controls are visible from the paths; lengths are typically 1-1.5km.

SL
Star and Loop courses are where the group leader chooses a central base, and sends the students out to collect a single control, or pair of controls, and then return to base. They are particularly suitable for very young beginners.

S
Score courses are where you visit as many controls as you can, in any order you choose, usually within some kind of time limit - or see who can visit all the controls in the shortest time.

The Wheelchair/White course (1km, 9 controls) goes out along the main path, across to the canal bank and back along the canal.

The Orange course (1.2km, 12 controls) goes out parallel to the canal, and returns down the disused railway.

The suggested base for Stars and Loops exercises is control A - about 80m along the track from the Start/Finish post. There are 10 controls close by.

Note that the SouthEast end of Worsley Woods is about 1km further along the disused railway from the North end of this map. The areas could be combined for an extended exercise.
