The work going on in Bramhall Park at present has raised quite a few comments, so here is the explanation for it. 140 years ago the then owner of the Hall, Charles Nevill, embarked on a radical redevelopment of his beloved park. He rerouted the Main Drive to make a more theatrical reveal of the Hall to his visitors, he planted many trees and most impressively, he made three ponds in which he could indulge his passion for fishing. In order to provide them with water he “canalised” the Ladybrook (straightened and lined it with stone) and installed weirs which allow water to reach each pond in turn. Now, over a century later, the canalisation is breaking down and the banks are eroding as the stream tries to reassert its power. Additionally, the work which Charles Nevill carried out in all innocence is preventing fish from swimming far upstream as they would have done beforehand. Today’s work is designed to send part of the stream through its original channel to ease fish migration, and also to reduce erosion. This is all part of an ambitious plan to remove all such obstacles from the Ladybrook, overseen and funded by the Mersey Rivers Trust. About 80% of rivers in the North-west have been affected in some way by man’s efforts (the Industrial Revolution came at a cost), more than any other region. We look forward to a rejuvenated river!
– by Friday this week the river will mostly take the old course, bypassing the waterfall, and forming an island to the west of permanent control U.
- NB. 17/11/2025 – the missing posts J and S have been replaced.
- Note that we have abandoned post G, in its overgrown swamp – the post has been left in place so old maps will work for a while. Instead, we have installed a plaque G on the fence at the bottom of the steps maybe 100m to the West, and updated the map accordingly.
- nb. as of 11/5/2021 post E has been moved out of the undergrowth down to the path. On 15/7/2020, N was moved to a completely new position and H and L replaced and slightly re-positioned – so make sure you use the latest map.
- Parts of the area become very muddy and slippery after wet weather. F, R and S have undergrowth issues, and H and V can be very marshy.
