Woodbank Park

Course Status
Last checked May 2023. Everything OK.
December 2020 – the new bridge at P is now open, and P is now a plaque on the path junction at the South end of it.
February 2017 – control 36 has been re-positioned on the SE side of the pond; control 93 has been re-positioned on a boulder about 30 metres North of the marsh it was in.

Start/Finish
The Start/Finish is a thicket end, centrally placed at the edge of the top level open areas. It is a 600m walk from the main car park, and a similar distance from the alternative.

Directions
From M60 (J27) follow A626 (Marple). At top of steep hill A626 turns L at traffic lights. 100m after lights turn L on to Turncroft Lane. Follow to sharp R bend. Main Car Park is here (CP on map). Alternative car park is 500m further on by the Community Centre just before the traffic lights.

Start/Finish area in the centre of the park

Woodbank Park is an extensive area of open land and woods, suitable for beginner orienteering. The park runs along the Southern bank of the River Goyt, including fields and woods at river level, the steep wooded valley side, and more parkland at the top - which is 50m higher than the river.

Courses available (see Course Colours)
W
White is the easiest level of course, suitable for young beginners. Controls are fairly close together, and usually at path junctions, or junctions of paths and streams or walls; distance is typically 1-1.5km; the best route should be obvious, along paths, and require very few decisions.

Y
Yellow is slightly longer and harder than White. Controls may be further apart, and are placed at junctions or obvious features; distance is typically 1-2.5km; the best route should be relatively obvious, but not necessarily along paths.

O
Orange courses are of medium difficulty and distance, suitable for adult beginners - controls may be 50m from paths, and reading map detail such as contours may be necessary; distance is typically 2-3.5km; you may have several choices of route - some of which may be across terrain rather than along paths.

R
Red, or Long Orange, is the same intermediate standard as Orange, but is longer - typically 3.5-6km.

S
Score courses are where you visit as many controls as you can, in any order you choose, usually within some kind of time limit - or see who can visit all the controls in the shortest time.

The White course (1.3km, 5 controls) goes round some of the open areas at the top.

The Yellow course (1.9km, 9 controls) goes down to the river and round some of the riverside fields.

The Orange course (2.9km, 9 controls) does a wider loop, which also goes down to the river.

Both the Red1 course (3.8km, 11 controls) and Red2 course (4.5km, 13 controls) run clockwise round the top-level fields, paths through the steep slopes and the riverside areas.
