New Maps Please !!

Today we came across a group enjoying the challenge of orienteering on 18-year-old maps !  It is just possible that this won’t provide the best introduction to local orienteering.

Picture shows two parks for the price of one – Chesham Woods lake in the foreground, Heaton Park tower in the distance.

Access issues at Mirrlees Fields

Fences at Mirrlees Fields now line the two main footpaths as an attempt to curtail access to the full area. They’re shown on the updated map. Rumours suggests the area is for sale, and that planning permission has been denied. As you can see in the photo, the fences are hip-height and not barbed-wire so are more indicative than enforcing.

Best time of year

This must be the best time of year for getting out in our parks. Visibility is at its peak, balsam, bracken and nettles are still hiding, and the bulbs are just coming through. Picture is snowdrops at Alexandra Park, and daffs will be close behind.

Who knew ?

Worsley Woods is in beautiful condition at the moment.  The photo shows the info board looking across to the Aviary.  Did you know that the Aviary was built to be a hunting lodge, and the woods were planted to provide something to hunt in – so all the old trees are actually the same age !

Everyone can help !

A couple of weeks back, a kind user sent us this photo – showing Worsley Woods post B out of the ground and propped against a tree.  Without further ado, a new post was installed and everything is OK again (as per photo).  We always appreciate our users telling us stuff.
